2012 Young Adult Summer Reading Program

"How Many Pages Does It Take To Get to the Chewy Center of a Great Read?" (The world may never know.)

May 29 - August 6

If you are going into grades 6-12, why not spend some of your summer reading with hundreds of other teens in your public library's YA Summer Reading Program? If you hate to read, who knows? You might discover the one good book on the planet.

If you love to read, you'll get to treat yourself and maybe share what you love with other people.

Any kind of reading counts: paper book, recorded book, ebook…fiction, nonfiction…chapter book, comic book, magazine…novel, poem, article, short story, joke collection…library book, your own book, a catalog at the dentist's office…

How it works (short version):

  1. Sign up.
  2. Read for fun.
  3. Get something else fun.
1. Go to http://www.carmel.lib.in.us/yasrp/ to sign up beginning Tuesday, May 29, 2012 or come to the YA desk on the second floor of the Carmel Clay Public Library and use our Summer Reading computer. We set it up for this purpose only, no ID required.

2. Click on the Young Adult Summer Reading Program.

3. Sign up and WRITE DOWN your user name and password. Don't show your password to anyone but keep it in a safe place.

4. Read something that interests you. If you find something doesn't interest you, don't sweat it. W hen you are done with that book, whether you have finished it or not, log back in and record your pages. Estimate the pages if they aren't numbered. If you can't get to a computer right away, keep track on your own sheet of paper.

5. Go to the Young Adult Services (YA) desk on the 2nd floor of the Carmel Clay Public Library to pick up your prizes and/or raffle tickets.

6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you've read 1000 pages.

Here is what you get in addition to the pleasure of reading:

  • 100 pages - Summer Souvenir (prize)
  • 200 pages - Summer Souvenir (prize)
  • 300 pages - raffle ticket
  • 400 pages - raffle ticket

Prizes will be displayed at the YA desk. Unless otherwise noted, all prizes supplied by the Friends of the Carmel Clay Public Library.

Voracious Reader option: If you want to, you can set a goal for yourself to read 5000 or more pages this summer. Voracious Readers will meet from 2-3 pm every Tuesday from June 5 to July 24 to talk about what they've been reading and cheer each other on. You don't have to attend the weekly meetings, though, unless you want to. Drop in if you are free. People who meet the 5000-page goal will get to attend a special party on Wednesday, August 1 and receive a coupon for an extra treat from Orange Leaf.
